What Are Calligraphy Pens Called

In this article, I am going to be talking about everything that you are going to need to know about calligraphy pens or lettering pens.

I am also going to be talking about one of the most common lettering/calligraphy questions, what are calligraphy pens called?

You know that cool little pen that you need that will only create the calligraphy finish. Well, let me tell you what that pen is.

A calligraphy pen is called a dip pen. Which consists of a nib and a holder. But now if we are talking about modern calligraphy this includes a wide variety of different writing utensils from pencils, brush pens, and dip pens.

So now I am going to be explaining how you could learn calligraphy or more specifically all of the different calligraphy pens that can be used in calligraphy.

Here is a brief summary of what we are going to be learning today:

  • What Are The Different Types of Calligraphy Pens
  • Brush Pen Lettering
  • Dip Pen Calligraphy
  • Chisel Tip Calligraphy
  • Calligraphy With Normal Pen
  • Crayola Marker Lettering
  • Calligraphy With Pencil

Let’s get started

What Are Different Types of Calligraphy Pens

There are so many different types of writing utensils out there that you can use for doing calligraphy but today I am only going to be talking about a few in this section.

So let me just give you a quick list of Calligraphy Pens

  • Dip Pen
  • Any Type of Regular Pen
  • Pencil
  • Crayola Marker
  • Brush Pen
  • Fountain Pen
  • Etc

But anyway those are the different types of pens that you can use in calligraphy.

Wait…

You might be thinking you could do calligraphy with a pencil, Crayola marker, a regular pen.

Yes, you totally can.

Which are a few things that I am going to be teaching you today in this article?

So now let us dive more deeply into each type of writing utensil that we could do for calligraphy.

Brush Pen Lettering

Brush Pens are one of the most common pens that you would use for modern calligraphy.

What exactly is a Brush Pen?

A brush pen is a marker with a flexible felt tip. Since it is a flexible tip you could create thick strokes and thin strokes in your lettering or art illustrations.

I have actually done a whole entire other tutorials on how exactly you could do brush pen lettering witch you could go here.

Brush pen lettering is one of the simplest ways of learning modern calligraphy.

Yes, modern calligraphy not traditional calligraphy. Throughout this article, I just want to point out that I am mostly talking about modern calligraphy and not traditional calligraphy pens.

Want to learn more about the difference between the two (this is one of my own articles) you could click here.

Dip Pen Calligraphy

Dip pen calligraphy is something that I myself haven’t exactly dived into yet but of course, done some research to help you out if you are wondering how to get started.

I will be linking resources at the end of this section.

Dip Pen Calligraphy you could call it more traditional or is traditional calligraphy. (It just depends if you are doing different formatting or giving yourself some more freedom of breaking the rules.)

But anyway here is the more specific answer of what exactly is it.

I sort of explained it so let me just give you another answer.

Dip Pen Calligraphy is basically when you use a calligraphy nib and holder. Then you dip the pen into the ink and learn how to do calligraphy.

I find that is the easiest way to explain but of course, there is a lot that goes into learning that type of art form.

So I collected some resources that you might need when starting out.

Chisel Tip Calligraphy

Next, we have the awesome not so simple chisel tip calligraphy. I have done so many different tutorials that I must give you an awesome list to look at.

So here you go:

So what do all of these tutorials have in common?

Well of the writing utensils used to have a chisel tip. These all have the same concepts but just different types of mediums.

Now for the definition:

Chisel tip calligraphy is a form of modern calligraphy that you do with a chisel tip marker. This can go from using a highlighter to a whiteboard marker for lettering.

Next…

Calligraphy With Normal Pen

Anyway, you might be wondering is it possible to do calligraphy with a normal pen?

Yes, you could totally do calligraphy with a normal pen. It just a matter of practice.

Of course, I have done many tutorials that you can check out here:

So when it comes to calligraphy with a normal pen it is very easy to do but just learning the basics of faux calligraphy.

Faux calligraphy as you might tell is also considered fake calligraphy. It is almost an illusion of actual calligraphy that you would do with a dip pen or brush pen.

Very cool right, but isn’t that hard to do?

Nope, it is very easy to do. I am just going to give you a quick little picture format of my faux calligraphy tutorial.

I find this simpler to take in.

Crayola Marker Lettering

Ok, so you just found out you could do any type of lettering with a regular pen and now I am saying that you could do calligraphy with a kid’s marker.

Yes, that is what I am saying.

You can and is one of the easiest ways of learning lettering is with a Crayola marker. It is great for beginners who are having a low budget and think they need expensive tools for brush lettering.

I have also done a tutorial on this witch you could check out here.

But any way you might be wondering how is this done.

Well, the very first thing when learning how to do lettering with this marker is pressure sensitivity.

You might think that a Crayola marker has no pressure sensitivity as a brush pen could have but you are wrong.

The basics of lettering a marker is:

  • Light pressure leads to thin strokes
  • Lots of pressure leads to thick strokes.

If you want to learn more about this don’t forget to check out my tutorial.

Calligraphy With Regular Pencil?

Lettering with a regular pencil is one of the cheapest ways to learn lettering as a beginner. You might be thinking that I am now lying. But that is not the case.

Also done a tutorial on it here.

Pressure sensitivity again the less pressure that you put on a pencil the thinner the stroke.

The more pressure on your pencil the thicker stroke.

Yes, you won’t get as much line difference with another calligraphy tutorial but is a great way to start if you are on a very low budget.

Many people don’t take pencil calligraphy seriously but it is its own art in itself.

So I really recommend this for beginners because it could also help you more with the format of your lettering strokes which is something a lot of people miss when starting out.

Final Thoughts

You have now hopefully learned all of these different types of calligraphy pens that you can use to be able to start calligraphy.
