Is Calligraphy A Useful Skill
In this calligraphy tutorial, I am going to be talking about this simple but confusing question. Is calligraphy a useful skill?
I have been doing calligraphy/lettering for quite some time now so I am going to be sharing in this article if you should do calligraphy and if it is actually a useful skill.
(To be honest, calligraphy is a fun hobby that I fell that anyone could learn).
After you heard that let me just give a simple short answer so that we could quickly move onto the article.
Calligraphy is a very useful skill and a great hobby depending on what you are going to be using it for. For example, if you are entering the field of graphic design already having the background of calligraphy can help you in the long run.

Going More In-Depth
So I just going to be going more in-depth of what I was talking about above.
The thing is calligraphy skills could be used in many different designs and art forms. It could also be useful when it comes to a side hustle.
For example, you can start doing commissions, learning how to do tattoo artistry, greeting cards, logo designs, and so much more.
In my opinion, calligraphy is just a very base for you to be able to grow and prosper in a typical design outline or art form.
Another thing I want to say is I have heard if you are majoring in graphic design you have to take a calligraphy class.
Think about it why would you take a calligraphy class if it wasn’t useful or important.
And let us move on to the next question…
Is Calligraphy A Skill
I was talking about if calligraphy was useful but is calligraphy even considered a skill.
Well, no one is just talented and born with already knowing what calligraphy is and how to do it.
It is something that is learned so yes it is considered a skill. But it also considered a regular day hobby to a lot of other people.
But don’t be discouraged thinking that it is outstandingly hard to learn this art form.
It is actually not that hard at all it just takes a lot of practice and patience. I am going to be talking all about how you could learn modern calligraphy at the end of this post.
But anyhow back to the topic.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT CALLIGRAPHY IS
I am wondering do you even know what this art form is. I’m asking because there are a lot of misconceptions and things like that.
So I am quickly just going to be going over the two different types of calligraphy.
TRADITIONAL CALLIGRAPHY
Traditional calligraphy is considered a specific way of writing. In other ways it is an art form that is used to write beautifully.
Like I have said in other articles this is considered more “strict” and gives a specific way of doing things. Consider this the conservative part of calligraphy.
MODERN CALLIGRAPHY
Modern calligraphy is freer and let us consider this the more liberal type of calligraphy.
Here you are allowed to break more of the rules and format of calligraphy to create awesome lettering illustrations/drawings.
Notice I didn’t say it is a way of writing like previously. Modern calligraphy is now known more as a way of illustrating using letters to create emotion and etc.
How Is Calligraphy Useful
Right now I am just going to be going over a few ways that calligraphy is useful when it comes to anyone wanting to learn it.
Let me give you a brief answer.
Calligraphy is useful because it could help you with a lot of other areas of art and graphics. This could be extremely helpful if you are going to be studying similar things in college.
Let us now just move on from education.
I’ve done some researched and guessed what I learned…
SHARPENING HAND & EYE COORDINATION
I mean it makes sense doesn’t. When it comes to calligraphy (well depending on which one we are talking about) formating is key.
So being able to control the movement of your hand in a specific way is an important aspect when learning and mastering calligraphy.
GREAT SIDE HUSTLE
If you are getting really good at a hobby wouldn’t it be awesome to make money off it?
Well that is something that could be easily done with calligraphy.
You could make your own greeting cards, quote posters, stickers, and so much more. The skies are the limit.
Of course, you are going to have to get good at it first but I do find it is useful for earning a little bit of money when doing commissions for one of my customers.
Let us move on …
Is Calligraphy A Good Hobby
Basically you got your answer above but if you haven’t read what I just said let me give you the answer.
Calligraphy is a great hobby. It is a simple way to relax enjoy illustrating beautiful letters and create something but just drawing letters is amazing.
When I started learning lettering or modern calligraphy it really helped me to relax and be able to learn to love something. Look now I am talking all about it to you.
I find that this hobby has really helped me and is probably going to help you out when it comes to finding something to do. And of course it will help you learn such a beautiful art form.
Can I Teach Myself Calligraphy
So now that you have heard me rambling on how good it is to learn calligraphy let us answer this question. Can I teach myself calligraphy.
You can totally teach yourself calligraphy. You just have to put in the work and do the right research to be able to learn this hobby.
So right now I am just going to be giving you the very basics of modern calligraphy so that you could get started.
Anyway, I have spent so many weeks coming up with all of these tutorials I would like you to check them out if you are starting out learning calligraphy.
- Brush Lettering Tutorial
- How To Do Calligraphy With Pencil

But anyway the first thing you need to learn is how to hold the writing utensil. It depends on what form you are going to want to learn so check out the tutorials.
Right now I am going to be talking about brush pen lettering.
You always have to hold your brush pen at a 45-degree angle and never like a regular pencil or pen.
Now we are going to need to learn the basic strokes. The basic strokes are just the very base of your letters, words, or phrases.
The 8 basic strokes are:
- Upstroke
- Downstroke
- CompoundCurve
- Oval
- Ascending Loop
- Descending Loop
- Under turn
- Overturn
