Are Brush Pens Good For Calligraphy

So you can do calligraphy with a brush pen but is it actually good for it. Anyway, that is what we are going to be talking about in this short little section of this article.

Brush Pens are actually very good for modern calligraphy, not traditional calligraphy. The reason why is because it is a flexible pen tip leading for you to easily create thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes.

If you are wondering why brush lettering is not exactly the same as traditional calligraphy you could check it out my other article all about here.

But anyway I feel that brush pens are a great way to start learning modern calligraphy for beginners.

If you can’t afford any brush pens check out my other tutorial on how to do brush lettering with regular Crayola markers.

Anyway, you might not get the traditional calligraphy look but these pens would give you some freedom to be able to create nice lettering illustrations and some awesome work.

So now that you have learned that brush pens are good for calligraphy let us talk about…

What Are Best The Brush Pens For Calligraphy

In this section I am just going to be going over a few great brush pens for beginners let us get started. This is just going to be a quick little review.

I am also going to be leaving actual full in-depth reviews from other lettering artists.

(I am including a graph of all of these brush pens at the end of this section)

Tombow Fudunosuke

This is my opinion is one of the best brush pens out there for beginners out there and is a small tipped brush pen leading for it to be easier to control.

But there are is some other downsides they could be really expensive and have heard from other people that they run out of ink really quickly.

But here is another link to an awesome review from other lettering artists on this brush pen.

Tombow Dual Brush Pens

This is also a very a big popular pen in the industry.

Anyway, this is a large tipped brush pen so might be a little bit harder to control but this is one of the first brush pens that I have ever used.

If ind it quite great. They are also quite long-lasting, I’ve had mine for the past three years and only a few have dried out.

If you want to learn how to revive your brush pens check my helpful guide to it here.

Some other things that you should take in consideration si that it is quite expensive. For example it could cost about 4 dollars per pen if you buy them separately.

It is different if you are buying them in packs.

Full in-depth review.

ECOLINE BRUSH PEN

So this brush pen is again bigger and you ould say bulkier witch is something that may be hard for a beginner, but still should be considered.

I haven’t used these brush pens myself selves so I don’t have a lot to say about it so I am going to be linking to another awesome resource from another calligrapher, here.

PENTEL SIGHN BRUSH

These brush pens are very well for beginners because again they have a small tip like the Tombow Fudenosuke.

I find they are not as expensive but still no the most affordable. These are also very long-lasting.

Check out a full review here.

Mini Brush Lettering Tutorial

In this part of the article, I am just going to be talking about how to hold your brush pen and going to be leaving a link on my whole entire tutorial on brush lettering.

HOW TO HOLD YOUR BRUSH PEN

There are a few rules when holding your brush pen for lettering.

The very first thing is that you never, never hold your brush pen upright like a regular pencil.

You don’t want to do this because it could either lead for fraying (if you have no idea what this is go check out my article all about it here) and would be harder to get your thin and thick strokes.

Now the right way you are supposed to be holding your brush pen is at a 45-degree angle. This might be confusing to understand so here is a picture.

Another incorrect way of holding your brush is holding too much at an angle. This means that your hand is so close to the paper leading it to be too hard to control your pen.

Now you should go check out my full in-depth Tombow dual brush pen tutorial where I have so many other resources.

But some other things that you are going to find in that tutorial is a basic strokes guide. You could get your free basic strokes practice sheets (which I made ) just for you here.

Final Thoughts

You have also learned how to hold the brush pen to getting those awesome lettering illustrations.
