What Is The Easiest Way To Write In Calligraphy For Beginners
I have noticed that one of the most common questions when it comes to learning lettering is what is the easiest way to write in calligraphy for beginners?
Well, I am about to be giving you the top ways to be able to learn calligraphy for beginners. Especially if you are on a budget. But if you want the quick and short answer let me give it to you.
With my experience, the easiest way to write in calligraphy for beginners is probably using a regular pen. Second, would be learning how to do calligraphy with a regular pencil.
So yeah
In my opinion, one of the easiest ways to be able to learn calligraphy would be with a regular pen. Plus it is very affordable.
Here is just going to be a short summary of what you are going to be learning today:
- Easiest Way: Lettering With Regular Pen
- 2: Pencil Calligraphy
- 3: Brush Lettering
Before I continue since I have been getting this question a lot I just want to say when doing modern calligraphy it is not considered writing. Because a lot of people always say how to write calligraphy.
Instead, it is called illustrating letters. It is more of a drawing/ design than a form of writing. If you want to learn more about it click here.
Any way
Let’s go
Lettering With Regular Pen
The very first thing that I am going to be talking about is lettering with a regular pen. This is just a very simple technique that is just called faux calligraphy, hence the name.
So basically we are going to be doing something called fake calligraphy. Anyway if you want a more in-depth tutorial on how to do this I did an article all about. Check it out here.
So the very first that you are going to need is any writing utensil, to be honest with you.
But of course, a pen will give you the best results. In this tutorial, I am going to be using a micron pen.
So let’s get started.
The very first thing that we are going to need to do is to write out our word with our writing utensil, keeping the basic strokes in mind.
If for some reason you don’t know what the basic strokes are I explained it in my faux calligraphy tutorial.
Once we have written down our word we are going to be adding a second line to create a thick downstroke.
Here is a picture to see what I mean.
After doing that you could either leave it, do a design, or just shade it in.
It is as simple as that.
I find that this is very easy for beginners because it is cheap and it is easier than using a flexible tool for doing calligraphy.
This also helps you build in the idea of using your basic strokes whenever doing calligraphy which is something that you need to learn if you want to get into this hobby.
Pencil Calligraphy
If you were wondering I also did a tutorial on this also witch you could check out here.
Any way basically when doing pencil calligraphy you could use any pencil. When illustrating I would not recommend holding it like a regular pencil, instead you should hold it a little bit more at an angle.
Now the easiest way to explain this is whenever you are doing your upstrokes you are going to have the least amount of pressure on your pencil.
Whenever you are doing down strokes you are going to apply more pressure. This will then lead to a difference in line weight.
I would of course recommend that you should practice a few times and get good at it and start practicing the basic strokes. Witch, again I spoke about in my in-depth tutorial.
After practicing all of this you could create some cool looking designs like this.
Brush Lettering For Beginners
Now let us move on to brush lettering. This is the hardest of the two in my opinion because you are going to have to hold it a certain way and be able to move it a certain way.
I also did a tutorial on this click here.
The very first thing that you need to know is you should use smooth paper. If you don’t know what I am talking about click here.
Anyway once you have the correct paper I would recommend starting off with either Tombow dual brush pens or the Tombow Fudensouke.
Now we need to know how to hold the pen.
You always have to hold the pen at a 45 degree angle whenever using it for brush lettering.
You should never hold it like a regular pencil or your hand to close to the paper.
After practicing how to hold the pen you have to start practicing the basic strokes (like always).
Once you are completely comfortable with the basic strokes you should start on forming letters like this.
Remember perfect practice makes perfect. This means you must practice correctly. This means holding the pen correctly and that all your upstrokes are thin and down strokes are thick.
Final Thoughts
You have just learned what are the easiest ways to learn calligraphy for a beginner.
We have looked through the art of pencil calligraphy, faux calligraphy, and brush lettering. I would recommend choosing something that would be able to fit your budget when starting out.
You should also take into consideration how much time you would have to practice every day.
Anyway, I am just here to be able to guide you through the process of learning calligraphy and how you are going to start.
Feel free to comment if you have any questions.
I want to learn calligraphy writing.
It all depends on the type of calligraphy you want to learn. For example, do you want to learn traditional or modern calligraphy, and what language is it in? Usually, traditional calligraphy is considered a form of writing, and modern calligraphy is considered a way of drawing. Now if you are wondering what pens you should use for a type of traditional calligraphy, look for a dip pen (which consists of a nib and a holder). The examples that I have explained above, like pencil calligraphy, can help you transition into a dip pen. Also, you can totally learn calligraphy don’t doubt yourself 🙂
Hi, Loved your post. How long does is typically take to learn calligraphy?
If you are practicing consistently, every day, it should take you at least a month to learn the basics. It also depends on the type of calligraphy you are learning, and how much you practice. I hope this helps. 🙂
