What Is The Best Way To Learn Hand Lettering

You are wanting to get into hand lettering or any type of modern calligraphy and you are wondering what is the best way to learn hand lettering.

Of course, there are a lot of different ways that you can be able to learn hand lettering from articles to courses but today I am going to go through these things.

Since you are here wanting to know what is the best way to learn hand lettering well I am just going to make it very brief but afterward I am going to dive into it.

The very best way that you can learn hand lettering is going to be one on one, face to face, a teacher that is there to help you learn the art of lettering. In my opinion that is the best way. Of course, there are many other ways that can fit in your budget.

Now in the rest of the article, I am going to be talking about these different types of ways that you can start learning how to do any type of calligraphy.

This is just going to be a very brief summary of what I am going to be talking about today:

  • Formal Teaching Sessions
  • Online Courses
  • Articles
  • Self Taught

Formal Teach Sessions

If by any chance you know anyone who is a master calligrapher or a master at lettering ask them can you teach me?

The easiest way to learn hand-lettering is by getting teaching sessions from someone else.

I also recommend if you know someone who is giving out lessons (not online) but you could say physical learning that is honestly the best way of learning hand lettering.

You should do your own research and look into your own area and see if any calligraphy lessons are being offered.

This might not fit into everyone’s budget so that is why I made these other nice little ideas for you.

Let’s move on

Online Courses

The next best option to be able to learn any type of calligraphy would be online courses.

Honestly, the internet is probably filled with tons and tons of different types of online courses that you can take to be able to learn calligraphy.

Why I put this as second on the list would be because I find that it would be harder for someone to be able to learn something by watching someone through the screen than having someone there at all times helping them.

Again there are good courses out there that could help you learn how to do different types of lettering witch I really do recommend. Do your research and find out some good online courses to be able to get into this hobby.

Articles/Videos

Looking through articles and youtube videos can be helpful when needed.

For example, if you have a simple question but can’t seem to find the answer start doing your own research.

There are awesome videos that blog posts out there that can help you out when it comes to learning lettering and calligraphy.

One of the best youtube channels that talk about lettering/calligraphy would be the happy ever crafter.

She goes over all different types of calligraphy and everything that you are going to need to know you can find on that channel when it comes to lettering.

Then there are some awesome blogs who can also help you out like lettering daily or postman’s knock. In my blog, I also do some short lettering tutorials ( I’m here to help you out).

What I am trying to say do your research and you will be able to find very helpful resources to be able to start doing lettering.

Self Taught

Being able to just learn something all on your own like calligraphy or lettering is not impossible.

I am actually a self taught lettering artist and happy to have found this great passion.

So how exactly do you teach yourself. Again I did a lot of research when starting out and I actually like doing research which is the easiest part for me.

At first I found it hard for someone not being there to tell me that I was doing something wrong or not but I was able to learn from mistakes leading me to be able to learn lettering.

Being self taught is amazing but technically no one is self taught. We have had to get the information from somewhere that would help us on the journey.

Well like I have stated above a lot of blog articles and youtube videos helped me out when I barely started out brush lettering.

Being self taught is going to probably take more time than having someone helping you out through the whole process which is something that you are going to have to bare in mind.

But other than that being self taught is possible and learning how to do modern calligraphy is a great hobby.

Final Thoughts

You have just learned everything that I would say to a beginner if they were wondering how they were going to learn modern calligraphy.

This was a guide to help you with the process of mastering lettering and what is going to fit your budget.

When starting out I actually wished I would have information like this so hopefully you were able to take this and be able to master the art of lettering.
