One day you take out your brush pens and realize that they are drying out. You also notice you can’t get any refills for your brush pens. Now you wonder how do you revive a brush pen?
You are going to want to take the caps off of your markers and submerge them in water overnight. Make sure that they are not touching the bottom of the cup. This will work with all water-based markers.
Now I am going to go a little bit more in-depth on how to do this right. Here is just a summary of what I will be showing you guys.

Step By Step Guide to Reviving your Brush Pens
First
Here are some materials you’re going to need.
- You’re Dried out Bush Pens
- Cup filled with water
- Chopsticks/ If you have no chopsticks use Scissors (I WILL EXPLAIN LATER)
- Tape
Second
Once you have gathered all of these materials the first thing that you should do is put your scissors or chopsticks on top of the cup.
Like shown below:
Third
Put your dried out brush pens in between the scissors or chopsticks. This will lead to only the tip of your brush pens to be in the water. If you just leave them in there without doing this step it will lead to a deformity in your brush tip.
Fourth
You are now going to want to leave your brush pens like this overnight (if you haven’t used them for quite some time and you literally can’t get any ink out of them) it should be about 7- 8 hours.
But if you just want to give your markers a little boost because you are noticing that they are drying out a bit, then sometimes even just a minute soaking them in water can do the trick.
Fifth
Take your brush pen out of the water and just grab a sheet of paper and start writing a bit. You will notice at first that there is no ink coming out at all. Just keep scribbling and you will notice that little by little ink will come out.
Sometimes (depends on color or type of brush pen) this leads for a lighter shade of color than it was before.
Now you have awesome second life out of your brush pens.
How long does a Brush Pen Last
You might now be wondering then how long does a brush pen last? This, of course, depends on how often you use them, type of paper used, and if you practice a lot.
If you are practicing every day of your life and that is the only type of brush pen you are using you can find yourself wasting up the ink in just a couple of months.
If you are no using your brush pens as often, you can find them lasting you almost a whole entire year.

Ok let’s get started
Refillable Brush Pens
This is probably something that you might be thinking of first. After scouring and researching for a felt tip brush pen that is refillable (with good reviews) I have finally found one.
So you might be wondering. What are refillable brush pens?
Refillable brush pens are brush pens that you are able to refill with ink once you waste it. This is a really good option if you want your brush pens to last for years.
Of course, there are refillable bristle tip brush pens where the tip of the brush pen is like an actual brush. I don’t recommend using these if you are a beginner for hand lettering because it is harder to be able to control the little bristles.
Tombow Dual Brush Pens
You might have already heard all about these awesome brush pens and might be tired of hearing them again. Well, it is true Tombow dual brush pens are great brush pens in all categories.
With my own personal experience, I still have a set that I bought almost two years ago and they’re still going. Plus, I have only had to use this technique once (it was only for two of my markers).
So yeah Tombow Dual Brush Pens are great long-lasting pens.
Conclusion
Now you have learned this awesome technique to be able to give your markers another life. You now have also learned of some nice long-lasting brush pens and how long can a brush pen last.
