Hand Lettering On Whiteboard Tutorial/ Whiteboard Lettering Tutorial
So you’re wondering how to do beautiful lettering on whiteboard. This is the blog post for you.
Today I am going to be explaining is how to write these beautiful quotes or anything on your whiteboard.
But I need to answer this very simple question can you do lettering on whiteboard in the first place.
It is very possible to be able to do lettering or calligraphy on whiteboard. Lettering on a whiteboard is in fact very similar to doing chisel tip calligraphy.
Let me just a give you a brief summary of what we are going to be talking about today:
- Materials For Whiteboard lettering
- Holding The Marker
- Basic Lettering Strokes
- Connecting Everything
- Final Thoughts
Let’s Get Started
Materials For Whiteboard Lettering
Right now I am just going to be going over all of the different materials that you are going to need when it comes to doing whiteboard lettering.
The first thing that I am going to be talking about is…
WHITEBOARD MARKERS
In this tutorial, I would recommend that you would use a chisel tip marker, not a regular bullet nib.
Anyway, I am specifically just using the expo marker brand. But any type of chisel tip whiteboard marker would be perfectly fine for this lettering tutorial.
Next…
WHITEBOARD
You knew this was coming. I am just using a regular whiteboard from Walmart. Again any type of whiteboard is fine.
We’re moving on to…
Holding The Marker
Yes, you are going to need to learn how to hold the marker. There are two ways that you are going to need to learn.
The first way you are going to learn is for your thin upstrokes. Basically you are going to hold it like a regular pencil but making it only touch the very tip of the whiteboard.
Let me show you what I mean.
Now the next thing that you are going to learn is holding it so you get your thick down strokes. Here you are going to rotate and angle your hand so that the whole entire side of a pen is on the paper.
That might seem very confusing so let me show you exactly what I am talking about.
Then working on moving between these motions.
Basic Lettering Strokes
So what are the basic lettering strokes? Well, they are the strokes that you use to form all of your words, phrases, or lettering illustration.
It is very important that you learn these strokes to make sure that you are doing lettering correctly.
If you want to get free practice sheets and guide for these strokes click here.
Now there are 8 different calligraphy strokes:
- Upstrokes
- Downstrokes
- Compound Curve
- Under turn
- Overturn
- Ascending Loop
- Descending Loop
- Oval
I would recommend if you have never done calligraphy with a regular chisel tip marker that you learn how to hold the pen first before actually moving on to this step.
I also recommend after learning how to hold the marker to take some time learning these strokes even if you have already practiced them with a different writing utensil.
Now I am just going to be giving you the different pictures of the basic strokes.
Let us bring these basic strokes together…
Connecting Everything
We are going to now connect all of our basic strokes together so that we create our beautiful lettering illustration.
Let me give you a couple of examples of what I am going to be talking about.
For example, in a lowercase H, we are going to need to connect an ascending loop and a compound curve.
Then for a lowercase B we need to do an ascending loop and then an oval.
I could go on and on.
Final Thoughts
You have all just learned exactly how to write beautifully on whiteboard.
